OUR 1977 “NEW LOOK” LIBRARY

Since the opening of the school, the library has gone through several major face lifts and expansions.

Staff changes:

From the humble beginnings when all the new books were classified, covered and processed by the voluntary services of Mrs. Walls, Mr. Yip, and any students who could be “conscripted” for the job, we have progressed to two staff workers, and a team of student librarians. Miss Sin (1971-74), our first full-time staff librarian was followed by Mrs. Erwin and shortly afterwards, Miss Ng joined the staff. Also, for the first time this year, we have a F. 6 prefect, a former head-librarian, to supervise the library.

Changes in Procedures:

Although basically the same procedures are used, we now have official library pockets with photos, and this year, we are able to take out magazines and reference books and then, of course, there has been an increase in fines especially for one-day reference books!

Changes in the Set-up and Equipment:

By April 1975, a “new look” had begun. The old workroom wall was knocked down and the extra space used in the library. A new issue desk was installed, more tables and chairs were brought in, and most comfortable of all, a sofa and lounge chairs appeared. A junior fiction section was set up, and in 1976, when the old ‘A7’ was turned into a science laboratory, the study desks were taken up to the library.
Our very latest improvements have been the replacing of the old steel bookshelves with brand new wooden ones, a new catalogue, cassette recorders and tapes and many more books. Our library is, indeed, a place we are proud of .

Perhaps you are asking ‘what hasn’t changed?’. We could list for you our old friend the globe, some newspaper racks, some tables and chairs and some old well-used books but that would be all!
